ProTec Botanica – Week 4: Food and Beverage

Welcome to the fourth part of our fortnightly emails, a campaign that will run over the next few weeks and where we will be highlighting the industry sectors in which we work. Today we will focus on the Food and Beverage industry, for which we have an exciting product portfolio that could help you develop your next product.

When we think of essential oils within our daily lives, we often think of using them topically as an ingredient in a personal care product or in diffusers and massage oils in an aromatherapy application. However, we have seen a dramatic increase in demand for essential oils and their use in food and beverage applications. Furthermore, this demand extends beyond solely essential oils, the entire grouping of natural aromatic and botanical ingredients are where we see significant growth. The key factor is the natural element, the move away from artificial and synthetic ingredients where possible, which drives this industry forward to discover flavours from a natural source, creating tastes from nature.

It may be an essential oil, an absolute, an oleoresin, a distillate or an extract, natural plant sources offer many options for food and beverage applications.

Benefits of using natural aromatic and botanical ingredients in Food and Beverage applications:

  • 100% pure and natural.
  • Certified organic status also available.
  • Cost-effective as low inclusion levels are required to achieve taste profiles.
  • Many materials offer health benefits through their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
  • Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Whether it is a savoury or sweet taste profile that is required, the options are plentiful for the application and extend much beyond Vanilla, Cocoa or Coffee, be it for confectionery, beverages, dairy or oral care.

  • Citrus Essential Oils:

Lemon, Orange, Lime, Bergamot, Grapefruit and Mandarin are the perfect addition to smoothies and fruity cocktails. They have many major biologically active compounds which aid health, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

  • Herb Essential Oils:

Basil, Coriander, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme are perfect for savoury dishes, their characteristic aroma and flavour profile offering a fresh angle to dishes.

  • Floral Essential Oils:

Lavender, Rose, Geranium and Ylang-Ylang are popular in many applications, their floral profile offering taste sensations and trends in confectionery and beverage products in addition to their health-promoting properties.

  • Spice Essential Oils:

Black Pepper, Cardamon, Clove, Ginger and Nutmeg offer a warmth, spicy taste profile to savoury products and are now becoming very popular in beverage applications. Their active compounds that aid health, offering antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, are seen as added value when formulating.

  • Mint Essential Oils

Peppermint, Spearmint and Cornmint are the go-to products in oral care. Offering a cooling and refreshing taste profile in toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss and chewing gums, these oils offer exciting taste profiles in other applications too, confectionery and beverage seeing an increase in their use.

ProTec Botanica – Week 3: Aromatherapy

Welcome to the third part of our fortnightly emails, a campaign that will run over the next few weeks and where we will be highlighting the industry sectors in which we work. Today we will focus on the Aromatherapy industry, for which we have an exciting product portfolio that could help you develop your next product.

Aromatherapy is commonly identified as the use of essential oils and other aromatic plant compounds to promote health to one’s physical or psychological wellbeing.

The history of essential oils dates back to ancient civilisation, used primarily for cosmetic, pharmaceutical and fragrance purposes. However, nowadays, the essential oils market has seen a dramatic increase in the interest in Aromatherapy due to the numerous health benefits associated with them.

There are many ways consumers can enrich themselves with the benefits of pure and natural essential oils. Obtained either through distillation or mechanical methods such as cold pressing, once these aromatic compounds are extracted, they are used through inhalation, vapourisation via a diffuser or as a topical application via massage when homogenised with a carrier oil.

Below are our recommended essential oils to use for Aromatherapy:

Relaxation, sleep-aid and unsettled minds:

  • Chamomile Roman Oil – Anthemis Nobilis
  • Lavender Oil – Lavandula angustifolia
  • Frankincense Oil – Boswellia carterii

Chamomile Roman Oil, Lavender Oil, and Frankincense Oil are frequently used in the Aromatherapy industry. They are perfect for individuals who might struggle to get to sleep, stay asleep, or feel worried, anxious or stressed. These essential oils have the ability to make individuals feel restful, tranquil and can help relax the mind and body.

Uplift the mood, energise and motivate:

  • Rosemary Oil Moroccan – Rosmarinus officinalis
  • Sandalwood Oil – Santalum album
  • Geranium Oil – Pelargonium graveolens (L.)
  • Citrus Oils

Rosemary Oil, Sandalwood Oil, Geranium Oil and Citrus Oils as a group are the most popular essential oils in Aromatherapy due to their various suggested therapeutic and healing properties. These oils’ distinct, sweet, and characteristic aroma can help individuals improve and uplift their mood whilst increasing alertness and reducing anxiety.
