Product Highlight: Wintergreen Oil

We are delighted to showcase floviva Wintergreen Oil, Gaultheria fragrantissima.

Wintergreen is native to the Nepalese Himalayas, occurring naturally in the southern hilly belt of the Himalayan mountain range at an altitude of 1600-3000m.

Wintergreen grows as a shrub in community forests and private marginal lands, where user groups sustainably manage resources through the implementation of management plans. For the sustainability of the resource, the collectors are permitted to harvest Wintergreen leaves in a block rotation system for two years, allowing natural regeneration. The leaves are gathered between April and October when the plant is in the growing stage and ready to be harvested. The leaves yield around 0.5% of Wintergreen Oil.

Properties, benefits & uses

Our Wintergreen Oil is 100% pure and natural, containing more than 99% Methyl salicylate, with full traceability from origin to market. Wintergreen Oil is pleasantly balsamic, pink to red in colour, reflecting its origin in the distilleries of the Nepalese mountains. The oil is commonly used in aromatherapy as an analgesic and perfumery applications, especially in forest-type fragrances and as a flavouring agent for toothpaste, chewing gum and soft drinks.

“If nature could talk… it would ask us to choose organic”?

That’s the message of this year’s month-long Organic September campaign, encouraging individuals, companies and industries to listen to nature and choose organic. ProTec Botanica is delighted to be involved with the Soil Association Certification and the Organic Trade Board alongside industry partners from across the organic sector to support organic market growth. We are continually inspired that our certified organic business supports nature, protects wildlife, and safeguards healthy soils. Our certified organic ingredients are supplied globally to many industries and markets, including personal care, food and beverage, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, household and industrial.

As our managing director, Dean Lockton explains “We are aware of the ultra-processed planet in which we live, the climate emergency and the biodiversity crisis we are facing. Industrial farming continues to intensify to meet the needs of the population but at the expense of our natural environment. Destruction of the natural world needs to be addressed. We have a commercial responsibility in the global supply chain to ensure our CSR position is upheld. Agroecology, defined by the UN as “the science of applying ecological concepts and principles to manage interactions between plants, animals, humans and the environment”, is a new step forward, good for both the people and the planet. The health of the soil, plant, human and planet are one and are to be united.

The ecology systems should be embraced and utilised in ensuring sustainability. The entire supply chain should be a relationship ensuring equality and impartiality in all opportunities. Care of all people and their environment must be managed and protected for future generations. Ethical practices, social responsibility, sustainability awareness and environmental respect are credible factors and allow the provenance of the raw material being brought to market. Excellent customer service, extensive stock holding, competitive pricing and professional technical support with our market expertise and knowledge are our strengths. ProTec Botanica’s position is assured as a trusted source. Let us make the journey together.”

Soil Association Certification Senior Marketing Manager Niamh Noone says: “This year’s theme of “listen to nature” really offers a great opportunity for organic brands and businesses to get involved in a variety of ways, and we’re really excited to see ProTec Botanica get involved and bring their plans of ethical and sustainable sourcing to life. We hope that encouraging citizens to consider what nature would ask us if it had a voice will reinforce consumers’ motivation to choose organic to help the planet and help restore nature.”

Nature’s key workers
The all-industry campaign’s creative approach this year will hero nature’s very own “key workers”, the all-important wildlife that is essential to a thriving organic farm, those hardworking bees, ladybirds and earthworms that act as nature’s builders, pest controllers and pollinators. Using striking nature photography and harnessing the mechanism of protest via placards, the aim is to give the featured wildlife a voice, combining a strong message about nature in crisis with an engaging call to action. Nature’s key workers want us to listen to them and reach for organic this September to help protect their dwindling ecosystems and safeguard nature and the planet.
