Global Consumer Trends Within Personal Care

In the ever-evolving personal care industry, staying abreast of consumer trends and the growing popularity of specific ingredients and formulations is crucial to remaining informed and competitive. Here, we look at the current market expectations and our products that cater to those.

Essential Oils

The modern lifestyle has increased stress and anxiety levels worldwide. Many people seek natural remedies and holistic approaches to improve their well-being, and essential oils are perceived as a viable, natural solution.

Consumers increasingly prioritise a healthy lifestyle and seek transparency regarding the ingredients in their products. Essential oils are derived from natural plant sources, and their perceived benefits, such as relaxation, stress relief, and mood enhancement, make them attractive to individuals seeking natural alternatives to traditional pharmaceuticals.

The global essential oils market is expected to be worth US $54.5 billion by 2027, where the Chinese market specifically is projected to contribute US $7.4 billion to the sector by 2027, with an estimated CAGR of 12.75% between the years 2020 and 2027.

Clean Ingredients and 360° Sustainability

The emphasis on ethical product development and production has grown significantly in today’s era. Merely concentrating on recyclable or reusable packaging is no longer considered sufficient in terms of sustainability. Specifically, Gen Z consumers seek assurance that a sustainability-oriented approach permeates every stage of their favourite products’ manufacturing. As a response, there has been a notable shift towards sourcing ingredients that uphold the integrity of the ecosystem and prioritise minimising their environmental impact, and evident transparency from the companies for consumers, which is something that we take pride in when it comes to our products.

Active Ingredients

Active ingredients in the personal care market are forecast to reach around $7 billion by 2025, after growing at a CAGR of 7% during 2020-2025, according to Industry ARC. Increasing awareness about personal care, rising disposable income, an ageing population and demand for bio-based skin care products are the main contributors to the growth.

EcoProducts Foundation

The establishment of the EcoProducts Foundation serves as a platform for implementing non-profit initiatives in regions where baobab fruit is harvested. Beyond directly procuring fruit from rural harvesters, the Foundation actively engages in various endeavours, including supporting early childhood education, cultivating baobab trees, research initiatives, and fostering community involvement.

The Baobab Pre-School Programme goes beyond simply constructing schools; it is dedicated to providing these educational institutions with the essential resources, equipment, and infrastructure they require to thrive. By addressing the needs of these pre-schools, the programme aims to create conducive learning environments that foster holistic development among young children.

Through this programme, the EcoProducts Foundation endeavours to:

  1. Infrastructure Development: The Foundation invests in constructing, renovating, and improving preschool infrastructure. This includes creating safe and child-friendly spaces like classrooms, playgrounds, sanitary facilities, and other amenities.
  2. Provision of Resources: The Baobab Pre-School Programme ensures that the identified schools can access essential educational materials, such as books, stationery, learning aids, and educational technology tools.
  3. Training and Capacity Building: The Foundation organises training programs for teachers and staff members of these pre-schools.
  4. Community Engagement: We actively involve the local community in developing and sustaining these pre-schools. By fostering partnerships and engaging parents, caregivers, and community members, the programme seeks to create a sense of ownership, collaboration, and support for the schools.

ProTec Nutra and Inventories of Cosmetic Ingredients in China (IECIC)

The regulatory framework for cosmetic ingredients in China is based on a positive list system known as the Inventory of Existing Cosmetic Ingredients in China (IECIC).

The IECIC was a list of cosmetic ingredients approved for cosmetics produced and sold in China. The National Medical Products Administration periodically updates the list, and any ingredient not included in the IECIC is considered a new cosmetic ingredient and requires approval before it can be used.

The responsibilities of the regulatory authority for cosmetics in China can be summarised as follows:

  1. Streamlining record filing and registration.
  2. Developing and enforcing regulations which ensure the safety and quality of cosmetic products.
  3. Conducting inspections and investigations to maintain industry standards and protect consumers from potential harm.
  4. Ensuring product quality: The authority organises regular sample inspections and testing to monitor the quality of cosmetic products. This promotes transparency and accountability within the cosmetic industry.
  5. Monitoring adverse reactions, investigating and address any issues that arise under relevant laws and regulations.

We continuously work with our Chinese partner in registering and expanding our raw material portfolio for use in formulations for the Chinese market.

Indian Mint Oils

Mint’s versatility offers fragrance and flavour in many applications, its characteristics making it a core ingredient for perfumers and flavour teams globally.  Personal care, oral care, pharmaceutical, food, beverage and household industries all use mint oils for their natural characteristics, the feeling of freshness and cooling or the aromatic notes of herby and earthy

At present, the mint harvests are in progress. The peppermint and spearmint are close to completion, while the Arvensis harvest is halfway there and advancing quickly. We’re pleased to have received some pictures of the ongoing process.

We are happy to hear that the farmers have installed four leaf distillation units in their factory and allow other farmers to use them for free. It’s fantastic that they are providing free electricity and water which is a huge help towards promoting sustainability and supporting the farmers in the community.

Working with a long-established farmer group located in the main mint growing area of Bareilly, 440 farmers from the villages of Khajuria and Bhujia have the ability to yield 35,000kg of Peppermint piperita Oil; 10,000kg Mint arvensis Oil and 4,000kg Spearmint Oil.  This short supply chain from grower to end user is key in ensuring control of origin, harvest and production and we can offer both certified organic and 100% pure & natural conventional. The provenance and traceability assure ProTec Botanica’s position as a trusted source.
